Overview of BIS Registration

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in India is responsible for issuing BIS certification. The BIS registration means that a third party checks a product. This ensures the product is good quality, reliable, and safe for consumers.

You can get BIS registration in Delhi if you want. However, the Indian government requires BIS registration for certain items to ensure public safety. Therefore, there are 380 products for which this certification is mandatory.

License holders can use the ISI mark, also called the "standard mark," on their products after they get BIS registration online. This mark ensures the quality of the products.

In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards is a national standards body. The Bureau of Indian Standards Act 1986 regulated it.

This Certification develops and maintains standards for many products. It ensures their quality and safety. BIS registration is a process done by BIS. It checks if a product meets Indian standards.

What is BIS Certification?

If you have a BIS certification, your products appear authentic. Customers know these products do not compromise on quality. The Bureau of Indian Standards, or BIS, is India's National Standard Body. It was created by the BIS Act of 2016.

The BIS in India certifies products. This gives consumers a reliable assurance of the products' safety and quality.

The BIS registration aims to boost consumer confidence and trust in products. It ensures quality and customer safety. It also protects the public from potentially dangerous items and supports public health.

Benefits of the BIS Registration in India

Getting a BIS certification is not required in all cases. However, it can help you stand out from your competitors. Therefore, in this competitive market, it becomes important to have a BIS registration. Therefore, having a certified BIS license comes with many benefits, let's discuss a few of them:

  • Quality Assurance: A BIS certification ensures that products fulfil strict requirements by adhering to predetermined quality benchmarks.
  • Enhanced Credibility: The BIS Standard Mark shows high quality. It assures customers about a product's performance, safety, and reliability.
  • Standards Compliance: It confirms that goods meet Indian standards, building confidence among customers and boosting competitiveness in the market.
  • Customer Confidence: BIS registration helps consumers feel safe. It shows that products meet strict quality and safety standards.
  • Legal Compliance: BIS standard mark guarantees adherence to national and regulatory guidance.
  • Increased Market Reach: Companies can reach many customers by getting a BIS registration. This helps them increase sales and grow in the market.

Types of BIS Registration or Certification

The BIS certification in India comes in different programs based on your product and business type. It is important to know the types of BIS certification available. This way, you can see which category your product belongs to. Here are the different types of BIS Registrations available:

ISI Mark Scheme for Domestic Manufacturers

Manufacturers of goods subject to the mandatory BIS registration (Scheme-I) must register using the standard process. On the other hand, the list of items for streamlined registration includes some products that require mandatory certification. The maker of items needing BIS ISI Mark registration should use the easier process for registration. This applies to products that qualify for simplified registration.

Simplified Process for Domestic Manufacturers

To expedite the process of awarding a BIS license, the BIS instituted the streamlined approach. Application for BIS under the streamlined approach is mandatory for the makers of the items specified under it. Under this streamlined process, the BIS awards the license within 30 days of submitting the BIS certification application.

ECO Mark Scheme

Under the ECO mark program, the BIS registration is beneficial for ecological items as well. BIS classifies all environmental goods that meet the fundamental conditions outlined in Indian Standards under this system. The items receive both an "ISI Mark" and an "ECO" mark from the BIS.

Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS)

In six months, the Foreign Producers Certification Scheme (FMCS) allows foreign producers to obtain the ISI mark. This mark is given by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Products can receive a BIS standard mark. We implement this under two schemes: the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) and the Compulsory BIS Certification Scheme (Scheme-I).

BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)

In 2012, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) notified the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). The order for electronic devices was approved.

It is called the "Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012." This order applies to 15 types of electronic devices. But afterwards, it expanded the list of electronic and IT items covered by the CRS.

BIS Hallmark Scheme Registration for Gold and Silver Products

The BIS Hallmark Scheme guarantees the purity and authenticity of gold and silver products in India. It ensures compliance with national standards, assuring consumers of quality and reliability in their precious metal purchases.

Objectives of getting a BIS Certificate

The following are the main objectives of registering with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS):

  • Compliance with rules: To make sure products are safe and work well, they must meet the standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards. They also need to follow the rules created by this organization..
  • Legal Requirement: The BIS Act says that some items must have a BIS standard mark to be sold in India. Registration ensures compliance with these rules.
  • Customer Confidence: BIS registration helps increase customer acceptance. It builds trust and confidence in the safety, reliability, and quality of certified products.
  • Market Access: Having a BIS registration helps manufacturers enter the Indian market. It allows them to sell their goods legally across the country.
  • Competitive edge: Separating certified items from non-certified ones helps businesses stand out. This boosts their marketability and improves their reputation.
  • International commerce: BIS Certification helps exporters by proving their products meet international quality standards. This makes it easier to trade and access markets abroad.
