Food is one of the most progressive segments of the Indian economy. The prospects for expansion are vast and can range from firms in the food processing sector engaged in micro-businesses to major industrial corporations. However, with the increasing popularity, food items should be monitored and ensured to comply with quality norms. So, the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) provide food safety quality.
This blog will explain an FSSAI license for food manufacturing, how to apply for it, the documents needed, the cost, and other aspects essential for an FSAAI food license.
The FSSAI manufacturing license is legal for all manufacturers wanting food products. The Indian Government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare provides it through an independent organization known as FSSAI.
The food manufacturer’s category in India is vast and includes multinationals, companies and small local individuals who blend food. The process involved in how an FSSAI license would be issued for the manufacturers depends on the kind of businesses (KOBs) of the relative FBOs.
It doesn't matter the turnover; they should apply for an FSSAI State manufacturing license; this includes petty traders and minor persons baking from home.
The food business operators with sales turnover of over Rupees twenty Crore or having business outlets in more than one state and the contractors who secure central government tender for running their business at airports, sea ports, and railways should also have FSSAI central license from the authorities.
Acquiring an FSSAI license is easy and can be applied on the FSSAI's FLRS – the Food Licensing and Registration System portal.
Complete the FSSAI License Requirement form and Submit the FSSAI license application at the FSSAI portal.
On completion, 17-digit application reference numbers will be created and made available by FSI almost immediately.
Once applied, the relevant authorities will approve or disapprove such an application within seven working days. A food safety officer will inspect the premises if they reject your application.
To know your FSSAI application status for the reference number given to you, you can easily use our FSSAI Application Status Checker.
After the food safety officer does the inspection and verification, clearance to go ahead and issue an FSSAI license to authorities in food manufacturing will be given.
However, permits will be processed within 30 working days, and the license will be issued and delivered to a registered email address in soft form.
Through the same FLRS portal, an FSSAI license can be renewed. The best practice is to apply for renewal 30 days before the expiry of the current permit is recommended. The renewal process is similar to the application process, but failure to renew the license faces steep penalties or business closure.
Rs. 2,000-5,000 per year
Rs. 7,500 + 18% GST per year
As per the new norm of FSSAI, the applicants will be able to get their FSSAI licenses from the applicants with an Initial fee of ₹1000 + 18% GST only. However, once the licensing authorities have approved the application, the applicant must pay the remaining balance of the differential amount, the appropriate license fee, and differential GST as may be applicable within thirty working days. The loan approval will be auto-rejected if the applicant doesn't pay the amount.
Anyone manufacturing or selling foods not meeting the set standards will be subject to a maximum penalty of five Lakh rupees.
Any person who imports or manufactures for sale or stores shall commit an offence if he sells; the penalty which shall be recoverable from such person shall be between 2 lakhs to 10 lakhs rupees.
If any person misbrands or mislabels his product, he shall be punished with a fine which may extend up to three Lakh rupees.
Any company that publishes an advertisement for their product that has given a wrong product description or is misleading about the nature of the substance or quality shall be liable to a penalty of up to 10 Lakh rupees.
It remains an essential legal requirement for any new and growing food manufacturing business to acquire this Food Safety [FSSAI] license. Whether small-scale manufacturers or large-scale food processing operations, food entrepreneurs in India must conform to the FSSAI's requirements to sustain their business in the continuously growing Indian food industry.
